2009 Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest
Celebrate E-Week with the Volgenau School!
Thursday, February 19 3-7 PM
Dewberry Hall (Johnson Center), Fairfax Campus
Please join the students and faculty of the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering and the Volgenau School of IT and Engineering for the 3rd Annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest to celebrate Engineer's Week 2009. Last year's event was a huge success and we would like to continue the tradition!
About the Contest
Students are invited to build truss bridges out of craft sticks (wooden Popsicle sticks or tounge depressors) in advance of the contest. At the event, bridges will be evaluated by a panel of judges for compliance with the official rules (see below) and aesthetic quality. The bridges will then be loaded until they reach their ultimate (breaking) strength. Bridges will be scored based on highest load, best efficiency (strength to weigh ratio), and best looking (aesthetics). Cash prizes will be awarded for the best in each category and food/refreshments will be provided.
Eligibility
The contest is open to Washington-area high school students (grades 9-12). Student teams (up to 4 students per bridge) are encouraged, although students may work individually as well. Friends and parents are welcome to attend. Registration for participants and RSVP for guests is required by Monday, February 16.
Official Rules
The bridges must be of a certain dimension and be constructed only of wood popsicle/craft sticks and white glue. Download the official rules here.

Registration is now closed!
Event Location
The event will take place in Dewberry Hall on the ground floor of the Johnson Center on the Fairfax Campus of George Mason University. Upon arrival, look for the registration table. Teams will be assigned tables for setting up their bridges.
